Be a Mom in the Portuguese National Health Service
Implementation of Be a Mom in the Portuguese National Health Service (2024–2026)
In response to the growing need for accessible, evidence-based solutions to support maternal mental health, the Be a Mom program is being integrated into the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS). This integration is taking place through complementary initiatives, all with the common goal of strengthening prevention and mental health promotion during the perinatal period.
First steps: Growing Minds project
Be a Mom was first implemented in two Local Health Units (ULS) as part of the Growing Minds project, which began in September 2023:
- ULS Cova da Beira
- ULS Alentejo Central
This initiative is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and developed in collaboration with the University of Coimbra and the National Coordination for Mental Health Policies.
National expansion: Special implementation project
In November 2024, a new phase began: an expanded implementation project focused on the sustainable integration of Be a Mom within the digital ecosystem of the SNS and aligned with the national strategy for promoting maternal mental health. This phase includes a broader strategic partnership involving the University of Coimbra, the National Coordination for Mental Health Policies, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
Currently, Be a Mom is being implemented in four ULS, covering 20 Family Health Units (USF) and hospital obstetrics services:
- ULS Viseu Dão-Lafões
- ULS Alto Ave
- ULS Gaia e Espinho
- ULS Baixo Alentejo
Implementation Model
The Be a Mom implementation is guided by the Model for Improvement from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), leveraging IHI’s expertise in introducing new healthcare processes effectively.
This model promotes:
- The adoption of best clinical practices
- Continuous improvement of care and health services
- Shared learning among healthcare teams
